Ode to Sylvia 2023
Sylvia Lowry (1931 -2021) was my Mom's older sister. She was a woman of many talents - among them, teacher, musician, weaver, paper maker and book binder. I still find it hard to believe she's gone and keep thinking she will be at our next family gathering, sharing with each other the projects we've been working on.
Before she died, she gave me a large collection of her handmade papers. To honour her memory, I’ve used these papers to build and stitch her likeness in four portraits, eight if you include the shadows they cast. They are inspired by Andy Warhol’s screen prints of famous women. Family members sent me stories, words and phrases in her memory and I have torn and stitched them into the background of each tapestry. One tapestry now resides in my mother’s home. The other three are with my aunt’s children. Each tapestry is 20"x20"x4".
If you would like to pay homage in a similar way to a family member living or not, you may review my commission process here.
