Sylvia Lowry, 1931 - 2021
Sylvia Lowry was my Mom's older sister. She was a woman of many talents - among them, a mother, teacher, musician, weaver, paper maker and book binder. I still find it hard to believe she's gone and keep thinking she will be at our next family gathering, sharing with each other the projects we've been working on. Before she died, she passed on to me a large collection of her handmade papers made from local plant fibres. I decided to use her papers to pay homage to her. Taking inspiration from Andy Warhol's portraits of famous women such as Queen Elizabeth II, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, I created four paper tapestries in four different colour ways. Three tapestries were sent to each of her three children and one to my mom. |
